The Canton Lacrosse Varsity Girls (4 – 1) continued their winning ways today, with a decisive 10 – 0 victory over Tecumseh High School. The Chiefs, winners now of four straight, put together a tremendous defensive effort, that left Tecumseh struggling for possession and quality scoring chances. Goalie Grace Coyne was stellar in earning the shutout. Coyne wasn’t tested often, but when she was, she came up big with 6 difficult saves. Coyne also controlled her rebounds and made quality clearing passes from her defensive zone as well.
If defense wins, then everyone must defend, and Coach Tiderington had all the Chiefs defending tonight. This truly was a total team effort, but some girls still stood out including senior captains Brooke Gauthier (3 ground balls and 1 turnover caused) and Jenna Anheuser (3 ground balls and 3 turnovers caused), as well as Natalie Hadous (4 ground balls and 1 turnover caused).
The offense was again led by senior captain Katelyn Waligora (4 goals), who continues to be an offensive juggernaut and score critical goals for the Chiefs. Additionally, Lexi villarini chipped in with 2 goals and an assist.
Special mention should be given to Morgan Waligora (3 goals) and Katie Currie (1 goal, 2 assists), who contributed tremendous all-around performances. Currie was a perfect 10 for 10 on draws, winning every one she took and ensuring the Chiefs dominated possession. Morgan Waligora, in addition to her offensive prowess won 9 draw possessions on the circle and contributed 3 ground balls as well.
Canton’s next game provides a daunting challenge against state ranked Hartland as they look to extend their winning streak to five games. The game will be Friday at 7:00 pm on the grass field at Plymouth.
