After a week long layoff, the Canton Girls Lacrosse team got back to their winning ways, defeating a spirited Livonia United team 18 – 12. The Chiefs improved to 3 -1 on the season, and find themselves 1-0 in the KLAA Conference after tonight’s victory.
Canton senior captain, Katelyn Waligora led the Chiefs explosive offense with a spectacular performance, scoring 9 goals (including 7 in the second half) and adding an assist. She was aided by Morgan Waligora who added 4 goals and an assist, and Lexi Villarini, who chipped in with 3 goals and 2 assists of her own.
Livonia United Coach, Chris Merucci had his squad ready to play tonight, and demonstrated why the seasoned club coach was the right hire for the first year program. Livonia, was led by Maddy Champagne, who nearly matched Katelyn Waligora’s scoring output, with 8 goals, including 5 in the first half. Struggling to contain Champagne, the Chiefs found themselves tied with Livonia 8 – 8 at the end of the first half.
During the break, Chiefs first year Coach Sara Tiderington expertly devised some halftime adjustments, enabling Canton to slow down Champagne and United. Natalie Hadous was given the tough assignment of defending Champagne, and she collected 2 ground balls and caused a turnover for her effort. Additionally, senior captain Jenna Anheuser (1 goal, 1 assist) led the assertive defense, causing 5 turnovers and collecting 3 ground balls, while adeptly defending all over the field and doubling Champagne most of the second half. Rounding out the defensive effort was goalie Grace Coyne, who played brilliantly, making 10 saves, including several of the highlight variety. Coyne was especially good tonight at controlling rebounds and not allowing second chances. With the trio of Coyne, Anheuser and Hadous limiting Livonia to only 4 second half goals, Katelyn Waligora was able to go to work on the offensive end and drive the Chiefs to victory.
Canton will take their 3 game win streak on the road Wednesday to Tecumseh High School, where they will square off against the Indians at 6:00 pm.
