After starting the week 1 -1, the Canton Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team finished strong with a resounding 15 to 6 victory over Bedford High School. The Chiefs started quickly out of the gate and found themselves up 6 – 0 at the 18:46 mark of the first half and never looked back.

The Chief’s tremendous offensive output was led by a trio of players. Senior Captain Katelyn Waligora provided the goal scoring with nine tallies in the victory. She was supported by Morgan Waligora, who scored a goal of her own, while assisting on 3 of her sister’s goals. Additionally, center Megan Flanigan was dominant in the draw circle, winning 14 of 23 draws, and allowing the Chiefs to possess the ball for the vast majority of the game. Flanigan also contributed on the scoreboard, scoring 3 goals and assisting on 2 others.

The team also benefited from solid play from Lexi Villarini (2 goals, 2 assists) and Miranda Triolet (4 draw possessions). The 2 players were extremely important in Canton’s offensive scheme and were big reasons why the Chiefs were able to dominate the time of possession. Additionally, when the Chiefs did not have the ball, the 2 defended steadily in their own offensive end.

The defense was led by goalkeeper Grace Coyne, who was stellar in the victory. Coyne made 3 difficult saves, and used outstanding positioning to often force Bedford players to attempt difficult, errant shots. Additionally, Coyne led the Chiefs with 4 ground balls and assisted her offense with excellent outlet passes. Senior Captain Jenna Anheuser played a significant role in the Chiefs strong defensive effort as well, providing aggressive ball-hawking defense all over the field, as well as causing a turnover and picking up 2 ground balls in the victory.

Bedford was led by senior Danielle Laycock, who scored 4 goals and looked impressive in the loss. Senior Maddi Marsh also chipped in with a goal and an assist.

The Chiefs now find themselves at 2 wins and 1 tie at the conclusion of the first week of the season, riding a 2 game winning streak. The team will open conference play Monday, April 8th, against newly formed Livonia United, who will pose quite a challenge for the Chiefs based on their early season success.
