It’s officially a streak! The Canton Chiefs upended the #8-ranked Detroit Jesuit Cubs 2-1 on Saturday to win their third match in a row.
If the Chiefs’ play could be described in one word, it would be “efficiency”. In a battle of midfield control and stout defenses, the Chiefs only had 9 shots, but 7 of them were on goal and 2 of them scored.
Nick Rockafellow recorded his second brace of the season, scoring in the 63rd minute on a Christian Austin assist and again in the 66th minute from an assist by Kaelan Flowers. Rockafellow nearly pulled off a hat trick a few minutes later, but an exceptional save by Cubs keeper Lamar Price kept it at 2-0.
The Chiefs were on track for a shutout until a “curious” 78th minute foul was called in the penalty area. The Cubs barely converted against sophomore goalkeeper Alex Mei on the subsequent penalty kick to close it to 2-1, but Canton controlled the ball the rest of the match to finish with the win.
Rockafellow led the offense with 4 shots, all of them on goal, and 2 goals. Flowers and Austin each had an assist, and four other players had looks on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Hondorp played 65 minutes and finished with 4 saves and no goals allowed. Sophomore Alex Mei saw his first varsity action in his career, playing the last 15 minutes and recording 2 saves of his own. Mei allowed one goal on penalty kick.
Canton currently has won three matches in a row and currently stands at 5-4-1.
