The Canton Chiefs offense came alive in Hartland. Canton scored early, with Carson Parks netting the team’s first goal 3 minutes into the match off a free kick from Nick Rockafellow. The scoring continued with a Christian Austin goal in the 15th minute, assisted by Max Scheffler. Before the first half could end, Carson Parks “returned the favor” to Nick Rockafellow, serving up his own free kick which Rockafellow netted in the 37th minute.
The Chiefs went into half time up 3-0 and never looked back. Rockafellow and Austin would both score in the second half to each earn a brace, and Kaelan Flowers converted a PK to make it 6-0.
Hartland’s solo goal came on a penalty kick in the 69th minute to avoid a shutout, which Justus Heers got a hand on but could not push “clear”. But Canton responded with a 78th minute corner kick from Matt Wegrzyn which Christian Lopez netted.
The Chiefs combined for a staggering 40 shots, 26 of them on goal. Austin and Rockafellow had the gaudiest numbers: Rockafellow with 6 shots, 3 on goal, 2 goals, and 1 assist, and Austin putting a nearly identical 6 shots, 4 on goal, 2 goals, and 1 assist of his own. Carson Parks added to their numbers with a very efficient 2 shots, 2 on goal, with 1 goal and 1 assist.
Justus Heers was in goal for the entirety of the match and finished with 8 saves and one goal allowed (on the Hartland PK). Story by Brad Heers.
