Final Team Finish: 4th Place (587 points)
The Canton Girls Swim & Dive Team delivered one of its strongest and deepest championship performances in recent years at the 2025 KLAA Conference Championships. With 38 prelim entries, two divers, and finals qualifiers in nearly every event, the Cobras demonstrated big-time time drops across all three days of competition.
From major breakthroughs by underclassmen to veteran leadership from upperclassmen, Canton saw significant improvements from preliminary seeds to final results. Below is a full, event-by-event breakdown including each athlete’s best time of the meet and comparison to their seeded mark.
200 MEDLEY RELAY
A Relay
Prelim: 1:58.69 → Finals: 1:53.17
This group (Pham, Huey, Murillo, Kennedy) sliced over five seconds from prelims and presenting a D1 State Qualifying Time.
A massive improvement highlighted by Mina Kennedy’s 24.96 anchor.
B Relay
Prelim: 2:11.52 → Finals: 2:05.70
Ellinger, Yonker, Gregory, and Zhang cut nearly six seconds off their prelim time, demonstrating excellent relay growth.
C Relay
Seed: 2:35.25 → Prelim: 2:38.30
Edwards, Pradeep, Flynn, and Michener were slightly above seed but gained valuable experience at the conference level.
200 FREESTYLE
Canton put five swimmers into finals with significant time drops across the lineup.
Hannah Gurgel (12) - Captain
Seed: 1:55.00 → Best: 1:53.47 (–1.53)
Gurgel won prelims and finished 1st overall, improving over a second and reasserting herself as one of the conference’s top middle-distance swimmers and qualifying for D1 State Meet.
Ella Strutton (10)
Seed: 2:11.88 → Best: 2:08.40 (–3.48)
A huge prelim drop earned her a place in the B final, finishing 14th overall.
Liv Lecluyse (10)
Seed: 2:14.20 → Best: 2:12.06 (–2.14)
Strong, controlled racing landed her 16th overall with a strong finals swim.
Kate Stevens (9)
Seed: 2:16.73 → Best: 2:11.00 (–5.73)
One of the largest drops in the entire meet by any Canton swimmer; she moved up from a mid-pack seed into the C final and placed 17th.
Amya Bosanko (12)
Seed: 2:23.96 → Best: 2:16.70 (–7.26)
A massive improvement — over seven seconds — and a strong finals finish at 21st.
Sydney Bennett (11)
Seeded 2:28.33; unfortunately DQ’d in prelims, but produced a swim that would have dropped several seconds.
200 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
Canton advanced four swimmers to finals — all improving from seed.
Amelia Pan (10)
Seed: 2:12.32 → Best: 2:09.26 (–3.06)
Pan earned 4th overall, showing strong front-half speed and excellent closing free and accomplishing a D1 State Qualifying time.
Mina Kennedy (11)
Seed: 2:14.60 → Best: 2:13.53 (–1.07)
Matched her prelims time exactly in finals, maintaining 7th place in the A final and producing another state qualifying time.
Jasmine Pham (12)
Seed: 2:19.11 → Best: 2:17.41 (–1.70)
Beat her seed comfortably and secured 11th overall with her first ever individual D1 state qualifying time.
Audrey Huey (9)
Seed: 2:19.41 → Best: 2:19.08 (–0.33)
Small drop from seed to prelims and 14th place overall — strong freshman conference debut.
50 FREESTYLE
Abi McAskin (10)
Seed: 25.36 → Best: 25.47 (+0.11)
Slightly above seed, but still fast enough for 5th overall in the A final — showing excellent reaction time and tempo.
Erin Yonker (12)
Seed: 28.81 → Best: 28.60 (–0.21)
Improved from seed during prelims and raced well in a very crowded sprint field.
DIVING
Kiera Shisler (12)
Seed: 243.45 → Finals: 218.25
Finished 21st overall after a challenging final round but contributed crucial team points.

Consistent around her seed performance.
100 BUTTERFLY
Hannah Gurgel (12) - Captain

Finished 2nd in the conference with her best time of the year — breakout closing speed and producing another D1 state qualifying time.
Ximena Murillo (12) - Captain

Strong improvement from seed to finals; finished 8th in the A final.
Caitlin Gregory (11)

Huge prelim drop earned her 24th and a lane in the C final.
Praanjal Pradeep (10)

Solid time drop at her first event of the day.

Very close to seed time, showing consistent form.

Canton had one of its deepest performances of the entire meet here, with massive drops.

400 FREESTYLE RELAY
A Relay
Prelim: 4:00.14 → Finals: 3:33.72
A massive 26-second drop anchored by Pan’s 52.04 and Gurgel’s 52.22 lead-off.
This relay won the conference title and delivered Canton’s most dominant performance of the meet and an impressive 11th D1 State Qualifying Time by Canton Team.
B Relay
Prelim: 4:16.81 → Finals: 4:01.86
A fifteen-second drop from prelims — incredible improvement for Perisu, Liv, Ella, and Jasmine.
Canton's Major Highlights
17 swimmers dropped 3+ seconds from seed
8 swimmers dropped 10+ seconds
Peyton Szopko’s 32.92-second drop in the 500 was the largest on the team
Gurgel (200 free) & Pan (100 free) and the 400 free relay won conference championships
Gurgel (200 free, 100 fly), Kennedy (500), Pan (200 IM, 100 free) each earned All KLAA honors for placing top 5 in combined meet results of East & West Conference results.
Depth events like the 500 free were among Canton’s strongest of the night demonstrating the Cobra's training commitment.
KLAA West Meet SUMMARY:
Canton finished 4th overall (587 points) in one of the deepest KLAA meets in recent memory.
1. Northville (919.5) won 3 events (50 Free, 1 meter diving, 100 breaststroke) - 60% best times
2. Brighton (745.5) won 4 events (Medley, 200 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay) - 94% best times
