Girls Varsity Swimming · Canton Swim & Dive at the MISCA Meet

Canton Swim and Dive competed Saturday at EMU. Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association put on their annual swim and dive meet. The meet is available to any coach which is a member of the athletic association. Many coaches join just to participate in this fast meet.

The swimmers individual entry times must the association’s qualification times. The qualification times are challenging to make for the majority of the high school teams. Many athletes set their season goals in reaching MISCA cuts, and being able to compete at this event. Of course the MHSAA State qualification times are even more demanding, and for some high level swimmers would be their main season goal to compete their also.

Canton started the afternoon off with a new SCHOOL RECORD in the Medley Relay – 1:50.73 with Jessica Clark swimming backstroke, Jenna Leppek swimming breaststroke, Sophia Balow swimming butterfly, and Sadie Miller swimming the anchor, freestyle leg. The previous record was set in 2012. So the simple fact that it took 5 seasons to reach that standard again indicates what an accomplishment these girls had. Needless to say, this time set by the girls qualifies them to complete in this event at the MHSAA D1 state meet at Oakland University on November 24 and 25.

In the next event, 200 freestyle, Sophia Balow drops over 5 seconds to achieve 1:57.21. Her time is also a qualification time for the state meet at Oakland.

In the 200 Individual Medley (IM), Jenna Leppek (2:11.81) bettered her already state qualifying time, and Jessica Clark (2:12.06) accomplished her third state event by qualifying in the 200 IM.

In the 50 freestyle, Sadie Miller (:24.91) just missed the state qualifying time by 0.02 (:24.89); but she set a personal best in the event.

Sadie also swim the 100 freestyle with a personal best (:55.08). She will have another shot at both of these events when she swims at the KLAA Conference Meet Nov 3 and 4.

Sophia Balow had already qualified for states in the 500 freestyle in a previous meet, but dropped about 8 seconds when she set a personal best of 5:10.83.

The 200 freestyle relay, comprised of Elena Balow, Ellie Caruso, Leah Kolb, and Dainelle Tabar each split close to season bests in their relay event.

Jessica Clark swam the 100 backstroke with a season best of :59.80. This time bettered her already state qualifying time by about a second.

In the 100 breaststroke, Ellie Caruso did a season best of 1:13.21. Elena Balow and Jenna Leppek both did personal bests with times 1:11.67 and 1:07.37 respectively. With this swim, Jenna bettered her state qualifying time by over 2 seconds.

In the final event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay not only qualified for D1 State meet, but was just 31 hundredths of a second off the school record. This is something the relay squad of Jessica Clark, Jenna Leppek, Sophia Balow, and Sadie Miller each believe they will accomplish as the season moves towards Conference Meet and State Meet.

Canton’s next swim meet is, Wednesday, October 18 vs Plymouth Wildcats. A Canton win would complete the Black Division (previously known as South Division) dual meet sweeps of Salem, Churchill, Franklin, Wayne, John Glenn, and Plymouth. This accomplishment would crown Canton Swim and Dive Team as Division Champions.
