LIVONIA – Canton sent four wrestlers to the podium and the team finished eighth out of 21 teams at the 29th annual Observerland individual tournament at Livonia Churchill High School on Feb. 1.
Sophomore Giulian Bodiu continued his outstanding season, placing second in the 215-pound class. He has won medals (2nd, 2nd, 5th, 5th) in four straight individual tournaments. Bodiu is listed as the 12th best wrestler in the latest MHSAA state ranking for his weight class.
In the 103-lb bracket, sophomore Brandon Watkins won third place overall. At 171 pounds, sophomore Adam Nicholas earned fifth place honors for his first medal of the 2019-20 season. And senior Mario Succurro (140lbs) took home a sixth place medal. Chiefs with at least three wins included seniors Dylan Slowik (160lbs) and Gabe DiCola (125lbs).
The success of our second-year wrestlers, combined with the veteran leadership of its seniors, is a good sign that Canton’s wrestling program is positioned for sustained success in the KLAA and MHSAA.
Next Up: Canton will host Senior Night at Canton High School this Wednesday, Feb. 5. Come out and cheer the Chiefs as they square off against Dearborn Fordson. Come celebrate the achievements of our seven seniors – Gabe DiCola, Yacoub Hamed, Dylan Slowik, Mario Succurro, Dillon Vanderpool, Mitch Winnie and Sam Wolf.
