The Canton Swim and Dive Team competed at the end of the season Invitational held at Northville High School on Saturday, October 27, 2018. This meet was intended for athletes not attending the KLAA Conference Championships on Nov 1 and 3rd.
A variety of great swim / dives were performed at this “summative assessment” meet. The athletes had been training since August 8 for this opportunity. Practices are held most everyday day, including weekends, to prepare themselves to be the best swimmer/diver possible. Many dual meets and invitationals throughout the season allowed them to tweak and develop their skills for preparing for this invitational.
Several teams from the KLAA participated in this meet: Novi, Brighton, Plymouth, Salem, Stevenson, Canton, and Northville. Each athlete is allowed to swim a maximum of four events, no more than two individual events. The twelve events include: 200 Medley Relay, 200 freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, and 400 freestyle relay. In the 8-lane pool at Northville, athletes compete in hopes to better their season’s time. In doing so, a Canton athlete will earn 3 credits towards their varsity letter. A Canton varsity letter is comprised of attendance, performance/times, years on the team, versatility and best times achieved at this meet. A total of 21 credits are required to earn the varsity letter at Canton High School.
Best times performed at the meet were:
Kristen Gury (JR)
Meadow Maturen (SR), Emily Song (FR), Gabriella Stoll (SO), Swetha Jagannathan (JR), Sarah Parks (SO), Rachael Macionis (FR), Lilli Nolan (FR), Katie Conklin (SO)
One Meter Diving:
Quinn Sena (FR)
Meadow Maturen, Ella Rochowiak (JR), Swetha Jagannathan, Sarah Parks, Lilli Nolan
Thanapa Manthongkham (SO)
Kristen Gury, Ella Rochowiak
Emily Song, Alyssa Amos, Trinity Maturen (JR)
I’ve enjoyed assisting the girls to developed their skills throughout the season. The new dual meets for these athletes have lifted the bar, and provided a higher expectation throughout the season. I look forward to working with them next year.
