Multiple Teams · Canton Girls Basketball 2018/2019 Season

We look forward to the upcoming 2018-2019 basketball season!  It promises to be another season filled with a lot of excitement and comradery.  Last year, we christened our new “Bob Blohm Court” gym floor, named in honor of long-time Canton & Salem Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Bob Blohm.  His Hall of Fame career helped shape the lives of countless student-athletes in the basketball programs for both Canton and Salem, in our two high school’s outstanding sports histories.

First, we want to welcome our incoming Freshman players!  Freshman Coach Rich Sherwood looks forward another year coaching at Canton and providing this group with a firm foundation of basketball fundamentals and team play.  Several years ago, Coach Sherwood founded Factory Basketball which is an AAU Basketball Program that has helped numerous student-athletes from the area receive athletic college scholarships.  Factory Basketball has a facility which is located on Warren Road just East of I-275.  Coach Rich Sherwood has a passion for basketball and developing our student-athletes to compete at the highest level.

Our Junior Varsity team will be led by Coach Brett deBear who continues the proud tradition of Chiefs basketball by drilling fundamentals at every practice, preparing our student-athletes to play at the varsity level.  Coach deBear is the 2nd leading NCAA collegiate scorer at Albion College and was an all-around standout high school basketball player at Salem High School for Coach Fred Thomann.  Her father, Bob deBear, is a longtime coach in the Plymouth-Canton School District and coached at Plymouth High School for several years.

The overall character and caliber of our student-athletes continues to honor the tradition that defines Chiefs Basketball.  Last year our program had three National Honor Society members, numerous multi-sport athletes, and an overall varsity team GPA of 3.66 which ranked 36th in the state for BCAM academic honors.  The program also received a BCAM sportsmanship award two of the past four seasons, as voted on by the state basketball referee association. The varsity teams captured KLAA Division titles two of the past three seasons.

Coaches Rob Heitmeyer, Scott Thomas, Dave Riley, Bill Mair, and Griffin Riley look forward to working with the Varsity team as we approach another challenging non-conference schedule in preparation for division and conference play. The entire coaching staff and all our program participants are committed to our student-athletes and as they pursue their academic and athletic goals.

The 2018-2019 Canton Girls Basketball tryouts will be held on Monday, November 12th and Tuesday November 13th from 2:30-4:30 for the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman teams.  Please remember to complete your registration for winter sports.  Click here for more information on the registration process.

Let’s continue the tradition!  Let’s Go Chiefs!!
