We look forward to the upcoming 2017-2018 basketball season! It promises to be another season filled with a lot of excitement and comradery. We also get to christen our new “Bob Blohm Court” gym floor, named in honor of long-time Canton & Salem Hall of Fame Coach Bob Blohm. His hall of fame career helped shape the lives of countless student-athletes in our basketball program’s storied history.
First, we want to welcome our incoming Freshman players! Coach Rich Sherwood looks forward to providing this group with a firm foundation of basketball fundamentals and team play.
Our Junior Varsity team will again be led by long-time Coach Dave Riley who continues the proud tradition of Chiefs basketball by drilling fundamentals at every practice, preparing our student-athletes to play at the varsity level.
The overall character and caliber of our student-athletes continues to honor the tradition of Chiefs Basketball. Last year the program had five National Honor Society members, numerous multi-sport athletes, and an overall varsity team GPA of 3.66 which ranked 25th in the state for BCAM academic honors. The program also received a BCAM sportsmanship award two of the past three seasons as voted on by the state basketball referee association. The varsity teams captured KLAA Division titles each of the past two seasons and last year was ranked 8th by “State Champs!” in the State of Michigan after wins over Detroit Cass Tech, Bloomfield Hills Marian, and Ann Arbor Huron.
Coaches Rob Heitmeyer, Scott Thomas, Bill Mair, Brett deBair, and Robert Stillwell look forward to working with the Varsity team as we approach another challenging non-conference schedule in preparation for conference play. The entire coaching staff and all our program participants are committed to our student-athletes and as they pursue their academic and athletic goals. As a primer for the 2017-2018 season, we’ve posted two links below which provide some highlight photos from last season, as well as a fun Varsity team mannequin challenge taken in John Kemski’s “fun house” basement!
The 2017 Canton Girls Basketball tryouts will be held on Monday, November 6th and Tuesday November 7th from 3:00 – 5:00 for all three teams. Please remember to complete your registration for winter sports. Click here for more information on the registration process.
Let’s continue the tradition! Let’s Go Chiefs!!
